WE LIKE THE HEAT AND THE HEAT LIKES US

In 1974, Joseph Beuys came to America without touching American soil. Wrapped in felt, he was transported directly to a gallery, where he spent his entire stay confined with a coyote. Made in the context of the Vietnam War and American imperialism, I Like America and America Likes Me brought questions of territory, protection, and coexistence between human and non-human life into Beuys’s work.

Fifty years later, wars over resources and accelerating ecological crises have brought questions of material dependency back into focus. Wildfires and energy disruption expose the fragility of global supply chains and our entanglement with the earth, while a political turn toward protectionism and strategic autonomy is reshaping the boundaries through which resources, goods, and bodies move.

Starting from Beuys’s use of insulation, protection, and encounters with the “wild,” we shift attention from the symbolic properties of materials to the politics of their production, how they become legible, and the boundaries they traverse and disturb.

The paradox of boundaries is that they are rarely absolute. Skin, fur, clothing, insulation membranes, borders, shipping regulations: each delineates an inside from an outside while selectively permitting passage. Heat escapes through insulation. Bodies cross borders. Materials shift between commodity and artwork according to the paperwork that accompanies them. An animal’s pelt protects it from its environment while remaining in exchange with it.

We Like the Heat and the Heat Likes Us takes heat as both material condition and mode of perception. Heat accumulates, dissipates, and leaves traces. It registers contact without distinguishing between intimacy and intrusion. Warmth can be exchanged through touch, generated through friction, retained as protection, or imposed with destructive force. Heat makes boundaries perceptible by crossing them.

plasticland

plasticland is a Los Angeles based design studio and creative collective, focused on material research, immersive installation and spatial storytelling. We have created site-specific installations, immersive environments and participatory workshops at Gallery ALSO in LA , Galleri Nos in Stockholm, at MEDS in Zaragoza and Palais de Tokyo in Paris.

AMBIENT CORPSE

AMBIENT CORPSE is the artistic and experimental practice of Salomon Cordova, Michael Lane Boldt and Casey Rehm exploring industrial material processes and emergent spatial intelligence.

SAP Space

SAP Space is a collectively-run project space that approaches the garden as an expanded and generative concept. It considers the garden not just as a physical site, but also as a conceptual space — a place where questions about nature, culture, and their entanglements can be explored.

Located in the Hinterhof of a classic Neukölln (replace with Berlin for international contexts?) Altbau, SAP Space consists of a small, single-story building and the surrounding garden that envelops it. Together, they form a porous site where inside and outside, built and grown environments, are continuously in dialogue.

SAP Space members include artists, artists-curators, writers, and other culture practitioners curating a diverse program of exhibitions, performances, readings, and exchange.
