About
English
The international art project “Unreliable Narrators” takes its title from a concept in literary theory and narratology. The term refers to a person or narrative voice whose account cannot be trusted and is revealed over the course of a story to be untrue.
The collaboration explores the fragility of assertions and information that characterizes our time. Each stage of the works involves responding to what is already there, reinterpreting and transforming it.
In the project, digital images are created collaboratively from three different color layers by three different artists. The process begins in Berlin (red), continues in Mexico City (green), and concludes in Los Angeles (blue). At each stage, the challenge is to examine, continue, and add to the narrative of the supposedly “unreliable narrator,” that is, the image layer or layers that have already been created in a predesignated color. This process requires each participant to exercise empathy and trust in a final outcome that everyone can accept.
In all the works, the three levels intertwine and overlap, although the contribution of each artist remains visible.
Once completed, the pieces will be printed in Los Angeles on large, vertically oriented fabric banners and exhibited for the first time. Their physical form makes tangible the digital, in-tercontinental journey of the works across three countries and cities. As a contemporary form of mail art, they respond to the current phenomenon of deglobalization, shaped by mis-trust, self-interest, and political and administrative restrictions. In the face of the uncertainty created by this development, the artists’ international collaboration offers an alternative ap-proach based on trust, communication, and innovation.
Open Mind Art Space
Open Mind Art Space is an artist-run alternative art space founded in 2016 by artist and curator, Alison Limtavemongkol. Open Mind showcases contemporary art from its diverse roster of emerging and mid- career artists. It is dedicated to facilitating a curatorial process that allows artists to create impactful work. Its mission is to inspire and challenge the local Los Angeles community and beyond by encouraging open dialogue about conceptual art. Originally a traditional white box gallery space, Open Mind Art Space is now an alternative art space occupying a cozy apartment located in West Los Angeles.
Axel Obiger
Axel Obiger, an artist-run space for contemporary art, opened in September 2009 at 29 Brunnenstrasse in Berlin-Mitte. Alongside two-person exhibitions and curated group shows, Axel Obiger presents an annual supporting program of performances, lectures, discussions, and artist talks. Collaboration with guest artists and curators is a central aspect of this approach. Through an open dialogue between guest artists and Axel Obiger members, we explore various artistic contexts and working methods, fostering a nuanced discourse between contrasting positions.
